architecture

in the last years tom was working mainly in the field of architecture and webdesign had to step back. recently he finished a diploma that explores how game engines can be used for architectural purposes. here is the abstract:

This text examines how architects can collaborate in networked virtual space-time using current 3D game engines of leading edge multiplayer games. On the basis of case examples of networked collaboration it presents the state of the art. It embeds the subcultural aspects of gaming and modding into a culture-theoretical context and brings them in reciprocal effect with the matters of principle of architectural production. It formulates a thesis to understand play as a strategy and criticism of work before the background of dislocative architecture. Finally it proposes a concept of prototypical 1st-person CAAD tools, which permit the architect to be virtually present together with others in the draft space.
